Hi,

If clamdscan calls clamd when it is run as a scheduled task is there a
reason for having clamd running as a windows service? It appears that it
would be loaded and using RAM for no reason.

If you are not in a hurry or not concerned with your scanning process spending a lot of time loading signatures then there's no reason to use clamd. Clamd is at it's best when used in real time to scan incoming and outgoing email, and for scanning ftp transfers. Clamd load the signatures at startup, and again with each update, so it has a fast startup vs clamscan.
