I hadn't run ldconfig at the time...oops, but I have finally fixed the problem....a silly error and oversight on my part.
I was installing in the following manner as I usually do: ./configure --prefix=/usr --sysconfdir=/etc make && make check && make install I never realized that the process was halting on the make check, and never proceeding to make install. I have everything working now.
