Both of these points are well-said and worth repetition.  :-)

Given how much memory a bunch of amavisd child processes can consume,  
not having to run spamd in addition helps conserve memory.  Note that  
just like when running spamd, however, you'll want to train SA within  
Amavisd against 200 or more ham and spam messages by running sa-learn  
as amavisd (or vscan or whatever user you run amavisd as).
