Well, it's a bug related to the -lthr library on FreeBSD 5.4 (and
possibly related to the one that impacts -lpthread on 6.2).
I've already got a PR open with FreeBSD:

I'll open a bugzilla entry too, including the PR details in the hope
that it'll help you all avoid duplicating effort. The foreground run
never crashes BTW - it's only when it's in the background it happens.
