Thank you to everyone who helped, both online and privately.
My script was fine, I used the same script on all of my systems, and it
was unmodified as downloaded from the authors site.
My problem was, on the system that was broken, that that system (Solaris
9 on Sparc), did not have a copy of the mktemp utility.
I found the mktemp utility here:
http://www.mktemp.org/mktemp/
after compiling and installing this utility, everything is working fine.

which shows someone with a similar issue, but did not resolve my issue.
Does anyone else have any suggestions?
