Ok, so we have freshclam, but what about making the databases available via rsync? rsync is a lot more efficient when transfering files like this where just the "diffs" to the files are sent.

The problem with the DNS is how often people look for changes. If the TTL is low and people monitor it every minute then you're going to have thousdands of people slamming the servers the second it changes.

I still think that since the databases are signed, they are secure, so maybe we should just have a ton of public mirrors (hell, I'd be willing to offer one) just round robin the DNS on a list of rsync servers, and basically almost check as much as you want.

The only problem is when the mirrors sync with rsync, you'd have to command line option it to only sync up newer files so that if you hit a mirror that has not gotten the latest update, they do not go backwards.
