You can setup your own (internal) database mirror. Freshclam connects to the httpd (80) port of DatabaseMirror, so you only need to download databases into a root directory of your www server (freshclam --datadir=, or edit DatabaseDirectory in freshclam.conf) and point other freshclams to this server.
Any chance that port could be made configurable? 80 is not an option in my environment.
