Jim, That was it! Apparently in my freshclam.conf file, DatabaseDirectory was commented out. I uncommented it and then ran freshclam again. Voila, all works now.

That gets me thinking though..when the line is commented out, where is freshclam
actually downloading the database to? Is there a hardcoded default?
You most likely have two copies laying around now that COULD cause problems later on. (Just check the archives to see how many messages reference two copies of main.cvd). I would try to find the other copy and remove it.
