Hi All,

I'm using the following:
clamd / ClamAV version devel-20040310
ClamAV version devel-20040310, clamav-milter version 0.67j
FreeBSD 4.9-RELEASE-p3

though, I confirmed this problem was also present as far back (maybe
farther) as 0.66 from a little over a month ago.

What seems to be happening is clamd reports that the maximum log size
has been exceeded (I have it set to the 1MB default, which lasts a day
or two). Relevant configuration:

LogFile /var/log/clamav/clamd.log
#LogFileUnlock
# Maximal size of the log file. Default is 1 Mb.
#LogFileMaxSize 2M
LogTime
#LogSyslog
LogVerbose

I enabled verbose logging in an attempt to see what was going on. Once
the maximum size has been exceeded, not only does clamd stop logging, it
stops responding. Up to ten instances of clamav-milter eventually start,
all waiting for clamd to respond, and mail delivery gradually grinds to
a halt. Load averages on the system go from their usual ~1.0 to 12+ in a
matter of about ten minutes. Shell access is noticeably slow, but still
reasonably responsive. The problem persists until I kill and restart
clamd and clamav-milter, and rotate the log.

Now, I know that I could work around this problem by disabling the size
limit and rotating the log file more frequently, but I don't think what
I've described, above, would be considered ideal behaviour in any
circumstance. See my response to the "Logging" thread that I'm about to
post.. :-)
