I have clamd running as user clamav, and the socket file located in /tmp. Because /var/run has root permissions, it can't be created so I used /tmp.
After a lot of fiddling I've got clamav-milter working like a charm. I think that if sendmail has been compiled using APPENDDEF(`conf_libmilter_ENVDEF', `-D_FFR_MILTER_ROOT_UNSAFE ') then its not possible to run clamav-milter as root. Perhaps that is why its not working.
