If I understand correctly new virus-signatures are sent to this list. If that is the case I see no more need to trigger freshclam - to download the new signatures.
Just add the signatures in the e-mail to your current database. That way you don't need to transfer the 1+ MB file every time, serverload should be a lot less for the update servers, and you're updates are direct/faster too.
I think this is the Right Thing(tm) to be done.
Are the complete 'changes/signatures' sent on the list, or only virus names. (I'm not subscribed on that list yet)
As far as I know the signatures aren't supposed to be included in the emails right now but why not include them?
If full-definitions are sent, i'm gonna write some mailfilter to put it in the virusdb directly.
If the emails are created with this use in mind, the proposed mailfilter will probably get a lot simplier.
