I gotcha now.  Thanks for such a great piece of software.  In just a few 
weeks I will also be using Clam AntiVirus on my new mail server.  From 
some of the previous posts that have come across today, I know that I 
will be very well protected from viruses.

It appends new data to the file, so eg. clamscan -l /etc/passwd
(and executed by root) will add the result of scanning to /etc/passwd.
