Dear Wash,
freshclam supports a daemon mode with the -d switch. You don't need to use the
cron daemon (it minimizes the number of processes in the system, though).
The following command:
freshclam -d -c 2 -l /var/log/freshclam.log --daemon-notify
will check for a new database 2 times per day and notify the daemon after
update.
