Just wondering is this was some mistake.... In the contributed docs for "Installing qmail-scanner, Clam Antivirus and SpamAssassin under FreeBSD" how-to by Paul Hoadley and Eric Parsonage, I'm wondering why they want to run freshclam every boot time as opposed to cron or if perhaps they meant clamd.
