yes, the latter. The 'voodoo' is called script based processing.
The Sessoin format of both Cinelerra and Ardour is XML, so I used
to hack some perl or python script to read the Cinelerra session
and somehow rewrite the clip and track entries in something which I
can paste into an Ardour session with a text editor + some search & replace.
So the result is than an selection of clips lying in the Ardour timeline
with correct positions, so I can start my further sound work.

Of course all of this works only, if you keep your source material well
organised, so you can create a frame precise mixdown/export of the audio
tracks of the used material, which can then be added into Ardour. XJadeo
is a great help for the further steps: it's an small Application which
connects to the Jack Audio server and plays a pre-rendered video track
in sync.
