I was thinking about one machine, with enough ram to handle about 10 OpenVZ Virtual Environments, Debian/Ubuntu/SuSE on i386 should be enough for a start, maybe amd64? I am not suggesting to do everything at once, but getting started, doing something small, and then moving on should be possible.
