you can use
apt-get build-dep package
to perform that operation. is not focused to standard users so im not
sure if you'll find it on front-ends like synaptic.

Does Synaptic have "build-depends"? That is a _really_ useful
feature of apt-get, if you build from Debian source packages (you
need a "src" apt-source for it, so that Apt will understand)
Build-depends is supposed to take care of everything if you have
the right apt-source lines; the "src" line for Cinelerra and all
the prerequisite unofficial apt-sources.
One thing that saddens me is that so many users assume that
building from source means chasing tarballs on the Internet,
or manually resolving dependencies. I think the distros under-
advertise their capabilities to help those who build from source.
