I would have to recommend Ubuntu as well. It's pretty easy to setup and and Synaptic (yes I know Debian has it too) will help greatly when building Cinelerra. Cinelerra has its own particularly difficult dependency hunt when building from scratch. Being able to quickly install those dependencies really helps with the headache you will already have.
