I started playing with it yesterday but the problem I have is I cannot get it to prompt for a password unless I start it from a terminal. That is a
non-starter for me.

I need something I can run from <alt><f2> and be able to connect.

have you tried something like that in <alt><f2>

xfreerdp /u:USER /p:PASSWORD /w:1200 /h:600 /v:SERVER-ADDRESS
