I never tried SH4 or MIPS, because I don't have a reason to do so. My PDA is ARM based. The port from ARM to x86 was pretty painless except for an error of my own that took a long time to find. But of course x86 is very well supported in gcc. For x86, most of the real work was configurating the build system. If SH4 or MIPS are less stable in gcc or binutils, then more issues might arise. Most optimistic case : two man-days of work.
