Have you tried with SynCE (www.synce.org)? I'm connecting a Dell Axim X5 just with the USB cable, and the device appears under an IP address (by means of PPP) under Ubuntu. Even further, once the device is connected (it has an IP assigned) you can user FUR (www.infis.univ.trieste.it/~riccardo/FUR.html) to mount the PDA's filesystem under Linux. Hope this can help you!
