Hello and Happy New Year!

I have pushed a new branch called 'utf8-conversion' to the CDE repo. I
probably should have pushed it some time ago but have been rather busy,
sorry about that.

The current utf8-conversion branch does work on both Linux and FreeBSD 11.

It uses the UTF-8 encoding for all messages, catalogs, and the like.

For documentation (help, dtinfo, and man) the encoding is still
ISO8859-1 due to our ancient docbook code base. So, while message
catalogs and the like are built with utf8 encoding now, all
documentation is still built with iso8859.

For this reason, using help while in a utf-8 locale (say, de_DE.UTF-8)
will show some character encoding errors.

Until we can convert the docs to a more modern docbook (XML/UTF8) this
will just have to do.

There is still some work to do regarding fonts.

The current fonts.alias file needs to be replaced with something sane,
and preferably using ISO10646 encoding (UTF8). These fonts are already
available in a standard X11 installation (the ISO8859-*) fonts are
actually built from these.

There are probably other things to be tweaked, so please feel free to
check out the utf8-conversion branch and let us (the ML) know how it
goes. As usual, patches are welcome.

I have done nothing with the nsgmls stuff we currently build. I'd
prefer to wait on that until work on the documentation happens - there's
really not much point otherwise.

dtlogin, and it's option for selecting a language probably needs to be
looked at as well -- I have done nothing with dtlogin. There are
probably other minor issues that need fixing too - hence, a new branch
to test and fix before merging into master. :)
