I'd suggest getting kermit working first to get things working and also explore the speeds to expect. Slirp should be faster than Kermit... and slirp may even fit into i&d.... but the UARTs on DEC gear in that era weren't always built for speed, so good luck. I hope you have better luck getting good performance than i did. 2400 was reliable, 4800 wasn't on venix on the Rainbow (though MS-DOS could do 4800)...
