The older 1403's did have a *feature* one could order so that print chains were interchangeable.  So, presumably not all 1403's were ordered that way.  But the IBM 1403 on the IBM 1410 ordered for the U. Wisconsin Registrar, and later used at the UW School of Business did have that chain interchange feature.  The chain came in a wooden box.
