That sounds like the biggest load of twaddle I have ever heard. When I was at Uni we had ASR33s that were in solid use and I don't ever remember them ever being out of order. Like all mechanical kit they do need regular lubrication, but then so did IBM2741 golf ball typewriter.... ..
