This uncited claim was introduced 15 years ago, along with the commit
comment "Hey, I saw drums (and core memory!) on PDP 11/45 hardware
running UNIX v6 (pre-BSD) in 1980 ... "

So, someone anonymous saw some once, somewhere, and promoted this to
"many sites."
