I've always been allowed to do my own when asked.  Their standard max seems to be  600dpi raw tiff.  But, you are correct - if THEY do it, you get one of a couple preset functions - and usually pdf or jpg.

Often times it’s the lowest denominator, unless you can do use a walk up 
scanner and make all adjustments yourself.
