CDC Display code certainly started out that way. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CDC_display_code. If you wanted ASCII graphics, you changed the print train on the 512 printer. If you had a 501 drum printer, you learned to translate. e.g. " = ≠ And so on... --Chuck
