FYI, DHL has interesting flat-rate offers for consumers across at least some European countries, e.g. taking your example of shipping from the Netherlands to the UK the rates are €10.00/€15.00/€20.00/€26.00 for a chunky parcel of up to 2kg/5kg/10kg/20kg respectively.
