Hi Thierry, in addition you may be able to use a small piece of sheet metal
bent to a curved shape to help guide the puck back in, depending if there is
enough space to wedge it in. I always recommend to remove the puck rack and set
it in another dewar filled with liquid nitrogen prior to dumping.
All the best,John

Hi Thierry,

This has happened to us once or twice but nothing so dramatic as you describe.

I assume you are referring to the Unipuck cassette holder.

My suggestion would be to lie the shipper down on its side and gently tap the
holder in the hope that the puck falls back in place enough that you can remove
the holder, place it back in LN2 and set the puck right so that you can insert
the rod again.

But there is a definite risk that you may lose some if not all of your crystals.

Good luck & best regards,

Pedro

Apologies for the non-CCP4 related question, but this is the best place to look
for an answer.

My puck is stuck in a shipping dewar after a “freak” incident. I was tilting
the dewar to pour the excess liquid nitrogen out before shipping. The puck
holder slipped partly off the dewar and hit the side of the large container in
which the liquid nitrogen was discarded. The impact made the T-shaped rod that
holds the puck in place slid out. This has happened to me before and I just
turn the dewar upright and slide the rod back in place. But this time the puck
– not locked in place by the rod – slid as well. It is not possible to thread
the rod through the puck hole, nor it is possible to get the puck holder out
because the puck being offset hits the dewar neck when trying to take the
holder out.

It looks at this point as both crystals, puck, puck holder and shipper are lost.

But maybe not! Has anybody had this issue before and how was it solved?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Thierry
