Dear colleagues,

I would be most grateful if you could bring the opening below to the attention
of interested candidates at your home institution.

With many thanks,
Olga

PhD Position

We have a vacancy for a PhD student to join our laboratory at the Department of
Biology, University of Konstanz.
Our laboratory studies the molecular mechanisms that enable the sensing of
mechanical forces in the cell and their subsequent translation into signalling
events that, ultimately, trigger cell adaptation to mechanical stimulation.
These mechanisms are exemplified in processes that regulate the architecture,
stress response and disease course of striated muscle. The focus of available
PhD projects is on identifying and characterising the protein components that
act as force sensors in the contractile muscle sarcomere, further communicating
mechanical signals to other organelles in the cell. Mechanistic hypotheses are
to be developed and tested at the molecular level. We apply an integrative
approach to structural biology that combines a rich variety of biochemical,
biophysical, computational and structural methodologies, with emphasis on X-ray
crystallography.

Qualifications

Applicants should hold (or be in the process of obtaining) a Master's degree in
biophysics, biochemistry or related discipline, and be interested in learning
both laboratory-based and computational methods as applicable to the study of
biomolecules. A strong motivation to understand and discover the molecular
mechanisms that enable function in living cells is required. Basic experience
in molecular biology and/or recombinant protein production is needed. Good
command of written and spoken English, the ability to work in a team, and good
communication and organizational skills are expected. Some initial knowledge of
biochemical, structural or biophysical analytical methods would be of
advantage.

Application

Applications should contain the following documents in PDF format:
1. Applicant's CV including contact details of two referees
2. Copies of original degree transcripts displaying marks obtained
3. A (short) statement of motivation for pursuing PhD studies in molecular
sciences

Informal enquiries and application materials should be submitted by email to:
