I never met Alexei Vagin and it has been some time since I’ve done much crystallography. Nonetheless, this news saddens me because of the oversize reputation I knew he had built. His name became legendary even to me quite early on. I appreciate knowing that his personality was as generous as his reputation was robust as a scientist.
