Dear all, After today’s news of the totally stunning effort from the DeepMind team together with the EBI team (that participates both in Instruct-ERIC and iNEXT-Discovery) that made available 350,000 structures, I guess you are all busy looking for the structure of your favourite pet dinosaur and wondering how structural biology will develop in the years to come! Perhaps some of you are looking at early retirement options, but we are super-excited! We already looked at three Alpha Fold structures and they offer amazing new insight to the problems we have set out to solve - confirming years of work in one case, and offering new ideas for experiments in all cases. Dos, guess what, the structure is not the end, its the start: we still need to make these proteins, and design experiments that validate the structural observations with biochemical and biophysical assays; and at least in one case we got an idea for how to express a new domain of a protein, to answer some related questions. The future of structural biology is now more bright than ever!
Our new call for access to experimental facilities comes in handy and in good timing, also in the context of these developments, as it integrates protein production services from Instruct-ERIC facilities and protein characterisation or quantification of interactions by the biophysics facilities of iNEXT-Discovery. Our experts can help you produce the proteins (and complexes) that you are interested in and characterise the quality of these samples, by general assays (eg stability) or specific assays (eg ligand or DNA binding). If these look interesting, you can also access other services of Instruct-ERIC and iNEXT-Discovery to study further the structure and dynamics of these macromolecules. Access costs will be covered by Instruct-ERIC and iNEXT-Discovery, subject to successful external peer review. Exceptionally, we will consider and support also applications from non-Instruct member countries.
