Imperial College London

Department of Life Sciences

Centre for Structural Biology

Research Assistant

Salary range: £28,200 - £31,250 per annum

Applications are invited for a Research Assistant position starting immediately
in the research group of Dr Harry Low in the Centre for Structural Biology
within the Department of Life Sciences, at the South Kensington Campus of
Imperial College, London.
The long-term goal of the research project is to understand how eukaryotic and
bacterial dynamins, in concert with binding partners, manipulate cellular
membranes and cause human disease. The work will involve the cloning of
constructs, protein expression and purification, and a suite of structural
techniques including X-ray crystallography and electron microscopy. The post
holder will be expected to work independently on their own project with the aim
of publishing in high quality journals.
The successful applicant must possess (or about to complete) a minimum of an
upper second-class Masters degree in biochemistry or related discipline. A PhD
in a structural biology or biochemistry discipline is desirable but not
essential for the role. If you are appointed to the role and do not have a PhD,
you will be expected to enrol in the Imperial College PhD program. Experience
in standard molecular biology techniques (PCR, cloning, mutagenesis etc),
biochemical assays, and protein expression and purification are essential.
Experience in X-ray crystallography or electron microscopy techniques is
desirable.

You must be able to work effectively within a team, have the ability to develop
and apply new concepts, and have a creative approach to problem solving. You
must also have excellent verbal and written communication skills, and be able
to write clearly and succinctly for publication. A proven ability to take
reliable and reproducible experimental data, the ability to deliver high
quality scientific talks and experience in writing research papers would be an
advantage.

This position is funded by the Wellcome Trust and is available for three years
with the possibility of a two year extension.
