Job description: The Hamburg Unit of EMBL hosts an international
laboratory with about 90 staff and fellows. The main activities are
focused on research in structural biology, the provision of experimental
facilities to the external research community, and advanced training for
scientists. EMBL Hamburg coordinates and is involved in a number of
national and international funded projects.
We are looking for a Software Engineer who will be responsible for:
• Maintenance and further development of an existing Oracle database.
• Development and provision of tools for data retrieval, statistics and
reports.
• Responsible for the technical parts of local web services.
• Cooperation with local administration team, and integration into the
IT team.
• Cooperation with relevant groups from the headquarters in Heidelberg
(IT, Press Office, Grants Office, Administration) and external funding
organisations.
Qualifications and experience: The ideal candidate has experience in web
application development technologies on the basis of JAVA and Oracle. In
addition, (s)he has knowledge in Unix/Linux, Python, Pearl, Apache,
Apache Tomcat, SQL, shell scripting. Experience in an additional
programme language (C, C++) would be beneficial. Very good knowledge of
English is required and familiarity with other European languages is
desirable. Excellent communication skills as well as a positive attitude
towards cooperation in an interdisciplinary and international
environment are necessary.
Contract: A contract of 3 years will be offered to the successful
candidate. This can be renewed, depending on circumstances at the time
of the review.
