Applications are invited for the Medical Research Council-funded PhD studentship, to be held in the MRC Dunn Human Nutrition Unit in Cambridge, for the following project to commence in October 2007:
Structure of bacterial respiratory complex I We study the structure of complex I of respiratory chains, which plays a central role in cellular energy production and is implicated in many human neurodegenerative diseases, as well as in aging. We have determined the first atomic structure of the catalytic core of this large molecular machine (Science 2006, 2005). Our aims now are to determine the structure of the catalytic domain in the presence of substrates, as well as to solve the structure of the entire complex by X-ray crystallography. Informal enquiries can be addressed to Dr. L.A. Sazanov at the Dunn Unit. Full details are available at www.mrc-dunn.cam.ac.uk and www.findaphd.com. Our students are normally part of the Graduate School of Biological Sciences of Cambridge University and members of one of the University colleges. Full funding, including maintenance stipend of about £14000 pa (subject to review), is available for EU applicants meeting residency requirements; (others can apply if they wish).
