It should work fine depending on configuration. It only relies on CDP if you're trying to use a seperate voice and data vlan. If you just want to configure one vlan on the switch port for the phones voice you'd be perfectly fine. Also, I think cisco phones support lldp as well. So that might be an option if you're using a different vendor's managed switch.
