GNS3 is a place to start your journey on, if you'd like. You'll learn a
lot, hell I did from an optimizing GNS3/Dynamips perspective from good
folks on this list like Bob McCouch, Tim and others.. There is another
program that was mentioned here called GNS3 Workbench that is a VM that
runs under VMware Player and is a somewhat complete package. It has
pre-canned labs in it that you'd might find useful for starters.

Be advised that while GNS3 (standard or the above mentioned workbench)
isn't too bad, they both lack the advanced switching pieces that you'll
need and will really only get from real hardware, meaning Cisco catalyst
switches. Upside is, is that you can integrate external switches into
your GNS environment.
However ask yourself; how much do you want to chew off at a time? Maybe
start with the routing side of things in GNS3.. then move on to
switching once you have the router portion mastered.. At the end of the
day, it's your call to make.

My suggestion is get as much hands-on time and research time
as you can. Back when I got my CCIE in 1997, there were no
boot camps, remote racks, etc., blah, blah, blah and the best
thing that helped me was the books/white papers/Configuration
Guides I had, the massive amount of hands-on time and seeing
through the network as if I was the packet.
So it comes down to your own personal style or comfort to get
to your goal. Set-up your own labs or use a program like that
from IPExperts that will provide you with a blended approach
of your time and effort, plus rack time (if you don't have all
of your own equipment) and boot camps. Keep you head down,
think through and you'll make it. The biggest thing is to
realize that it's you that has to make it when you get to the
lab so you need to know how to thing through problems to
create solutions.
For all of those that have encountered arrogant CCIE's, forget
about them for they lack humility and aren't worth the time
and trouble. Focus your efforts towards your goals, don't look
back but don't forget those you helped you along the way. The
ones that will help you the most, will be those that point you
toward a solution, but not give you the answer so that you can
find it with a little help. Sort of like turning the light
bulb on.

Hi all,
I have met some 10 to 12 CCIEs here in my country face to
face. they does
not even answer this question clearly. half of them
promised me about the
materials they used, but they never helped later on.
from those approaches, CCIE R&S is either much less
horrifiying than the
rumours or they became very selfish after they became CCIE
(R&S takers
only).
so, if I have time I will follow up the blueprints, do the
labs and want to
try once before I die. the only thing I should do, spare
some 1800USD. that
is it. honestly, here in my country I met 2-3
professionals who are very
good at data networking and have good careers (satisfying
with money and
content they do) and have no even CCNAs.
well, here is what certification is.
best luck to all of you.

Personally, I'd start with a CCNP - It will
significantly improve your
foundation. If you try to tackle too much, it might
become
overwhelming/frustrating really quickly.

Dear Buddies/Mentors/Guides
I am following this list from past 6 months but
never posted my comment
on
technical queries. on some general queries i answered.
now here i have some doubt and i am double minded
in this regard. so i
would like to seek views from you Network experts
to guide me and show me
the right way towards my journey to be a CCIE.
here is my query :-
I am having CCNA-RS and CCNA-Sec certification
from Cisco. MCTS-ISA
Server
certification from Microsoft. i have more exposure
into routing n
switching
as compared to Network Security. ratio is 70% into
Routing Switching and
30% into Security.
1) Is it possible to maintain this 70:30 ratio?
2) i want to go straight for CCIE exam, that too
within 2-3 years, is it
possible?, if yes then how?.- plz give me detailed
guidance in ths
regard?
3) Is it possible to clear lab exam thru self
study rather than joining
an
institute for coaching?
4) From where should i start? as i have all
stuff(EBooks/Video Tutorials)
from cisco, INE, trainsignal, CBT Nuggets n other
biggies in the
industry.
