The ISR G2 is great for branch-offices, it's the only IT device you'll need, as it includes: routing, switching, firewalling, IPS/IDS, VPNs, network management and server virtualization.

For the next big thing, one point is IPv6. It's not an application, but this is going to have a huge impact as we will have no more IPv4 addresses by somewhere next year. As for the next big application, it's definitely video. As I see the traffic increases for ISPs, it's HUGE!, all because of Video on Demand, Youtube-effect. People will create a lot of video content as text messages (e-mails, IM, blogging) are not personal enough, same with audio (podcasts). Good webcams are integrated in about every notebook these days, so there is no boundary anymore. Video is the key :-)

Another thing would be virtualization, everything will be virtualized, servers are first, then the networking appliances as firewalls, routers, VPN concentrators and all the management stuff.

Another thing I see coming is more and more iPhone apps. WebEx is working great on it, same with a lot of medical apps. I see network management apps getting to that platform as well. Manage your network from anywhere and anytime :-)

And of course for the ISPs, bandwidth, bandwidth and more bandwidth. Current estimates are 40 to 60% year over year growth in traffic as I heard at multiple ISPs. So the T-1600-Matrix and the CRS-1 will have a great future (if that's even enough) :-)

I guess timing is everything!! The new ISRs...
