Hey Ed, The ideas are very similar but there is also a subtle difference. Yes pruning will prune unused vlans but that is entirely different then weather or not the vlan is ALLOWED.
If you manually remove it it will never be allowed on the trunk period. If you use vtp pruning it is dynamic ie what if a user downstream joins the pruned vlan later?
