Hi All,

I am trying to tackle my enemy number 1... Multicast. I am a bit confused
about when two routers are connected to the same multiaccess network.
As far as I understand it, when using PIM-DM, an assert message is being
sent out, with the metric (AD + metric) of each router. The one with the
best metric wins, in case of a tie, the router with the highest IP wins.

Then later on in the material, in the description of PIM-SM, it says it
elects a DR, based solely on the highest IP address. This one will be the
one that sends a join up the tree towards the RP.

Are assert messages not used in PIM-SM at all? and I know from the
material that a DR is still being elected in PIM-DM, but it should only be
used when IGMPv1 is being used to select the current querier.

  Is this correctly understood?

Also, I have tried a pure PIM-DM network, and used IGMPv1 on my
multiaccess-network towards the receiver. However, what happens is that both
routers end up sending queriers onto the network, and not the DR elected
router as I expected.

All in all, a bit confused :)

Sincerely,
Kim Pedersen
