A flock of small birds feeding on the ground caught my eye on my midday walk on
Mt Pleasant Rd. They were in the field just east of the Radio Tower, east of
the band of light-tan grasses where both Common Redpolls and Snow Buntings were
seen a couple of weeks ago. But a closer look revealed them to be about 30
American Tree Sparrows. Interesting that so many different birds gravitate to
these same weedy areas—one can't take the species for granted (at first glance
they might have been Horned Larks!). There also has been a flock of Am Tree
Sparrows just west of the observatory, but I do not know if this morning's
flock is the same or an additional one.
