Aunt Edies Boiled Raisin Cake

*2 cups raisins *
*1/2 cup shortening *
*1 cup brown sugar packed *
*shake of cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and cloves *
*1 cup hot water *
*2 cups sifted, all purpose flour *
*1 teaspoon baking soda *
*shake of salt *
*juice of one orange *
*1 teaspoon vanilla extract *

Put raisins, shortening, hot water, sugar, and spices to suit taste in 
saucepen. Bring to a boil. Let simmer 6 minutes. Let cool.

Add sifted dry ingredients and orange juice and mix well. (This is a 
sloppy batter.)

Pour into greased small tube pan or loaf pan.

Bake in moderate oven, 350 degrees, for 45 minutes (tube pan) or 1 hour 
(loaf pan).

Let cool. Store.
