I know with Forums, there are typically users who become so much a "part" of the forum "community", they'll try very hard to make sure that no questions go unanswered (if within their power). It's much more difficult to find unanswered questions in the Google Groups. However, I also think the Google Groups have much to offer that a forum software does not. I fear that having both would simply diffuse the matter.
If the devs are interested in an official forum, however, I do have a perpetual license to InvisionPower Board that I have not yet used (i.e.: legal and free updates for life). (This offer ONLY extends to the CakePHP project and cakephp.org - no other inquiries please.)
