Another vote for jQuery... I just really like it's minimalism. I know you don't get the AjaxHelper, but it's really easy to to get to grips with. I spent ages trying to get some Autocomplete fields working with the AjaxHelper and just couldn't get it working properly (I wanted to show multiple fields e.g. forename, surname). I got a copy of jQuery and an autocomplete script and had the whole thing running perfectly in an hour.
