Also, JQuery is designed to be compatible with other js libraries (including Prototype). But Prototype isn't, and it can be a pain if you ever need to mix functionality with other good js libraries/ frameworks (e.g. dojo). JQuery seems much flexible and rapidly growing. Prototype is used by _many_ people, as one of the first major ajax libraries, and has good multi-browser support.
