I agree with all of Jay's excellent recommendations.  I would add that I usually advise new hams to start with a mobile unit rather than an HT.  I know it's tempting to have something "self contained" and easily portable (and usually cheaper) for a beginner, but the fact is that between the low power and the stunted antenna, newbies can be easily frustrated by not being able to hit a repeater, consistently getting bad signal reports, etc.  It seems easier to start with an HT, but it's harder.

Best wishes, and have fun!

I think some kenwood HTs are still made in the states.

I think most of their new offerings are tribanders though.

Hunt on eBay for some used TK and TH series you might find something cool!

Motorola makes some but they’re more targeted to first responders/professionals. You can however program them to hit specific repeaters.

On the HF side Elecraft is one of the best:

A new ham is looking for a radio MADE IN AMERICA.
Her has a Tech license (so far) and seems to be focusing on HTs.
Any recommendations for American made HT or mobile dual band radio??
