Hey Jeff,
Yea I monitor channel 16 in the main radio below deck and on the portable “HT” topside when in Galveston Bay and in the Gulf.  Interestingly, channel 16 is also monitored when sailing off the coast of Sicily, Italy.

Either way, when we make contact in 16, we immediately switch or QSY to 69, 70, or one of the other designated channels in that neighborhood.

73 & keep sailing!

16's for calling the Coast Guard; they apparently don't like if you even "radio check" there.  After you call them there, they're likely to tell you to switch to 22 to keep 16 open.  9 is the "hailing channel."  69, 72, and a couple of others allow recreational boaters to talk to one another...

Somebody around here likely knows the fun channels to monitor around Port of Houston, Galveston Bay, etc.

I think a lot of kayak fishermen just use FRS/GMRS, though they may keep a marine VHF radio in the boat in case they get in trouble on the water...

Yes, you can unless it’s encrypted, but you probably wouldn’t hear that anyway. Haha.

I thought the conversation was about talking to them, my bad. Exit stage left.

Calling freq Ch16 is 156.8

The most important channels on your VHF radio are 13, 16, 19, 22, and 70.

Channels 24-28 used to be interesting with phone calls but they are usually quiet now as cell phones came along...

Hello BVARC,
Spending a lot of time at the beach.  Wanting to possibly tap into some marine frequencies with corresponding tones. Have several HT's 878UVII plus, ID-51....
thanks.
