A real tower and regular HF beam requires ground augers with a 6 inch diameter
and 4 foot rods that sell new for about 80 dollars each. Believe it or not,
sand will hold much better than clay. It does not get any sandier than beach
sand and I had a 60 foot Rohn 25 tower with a Cushcraft A4 and 40 meter add on
that went through tropical storms and hurricanes with no problems. I would use
dog tether screw anchors or ground stakes, but the light anchors will hold
more. You can get what ever size you want at most any hardware supplier or
order from internet. They are everywhere and all of the mentioned places.
Don't try to raise the fiberglass poles any higher than you are talking because
the poles will break if you put much bending moment. You can improve the
strength by installing stainless hose clamps around the strength bands, but you
are reaching the limit. I prefer steel push poles that are much stronger than
the surplus fiber poles. Watch out for underground plastic gas linesThat are
difficult to tell from roots and can be easily cut with a screw anchor. Don't

Hello all, Thanks for all the great suggestions! What I am trying to guy is
a fiberglass mast comprised of military camo netting supports. When up it will
be 37’ tall. (10 x 4’ sections, - 3’ for the interconnects between poles) I’m
hoping this will get my 2m loop stack into the bottom of the 2m SSB sweet spot,
height wise. My 6m loop will also be on this, probably at about 30’. A
company called Go Vertical USA (www.goverticalusa.com ) markets these poles
along with a slick swivel spike arrangement where it would allow someone to put
up a light yagi, or a couple of loops and a light vertical somewhat quickly,
and it’s man portable (military oxymoron?) at less than 50 lbs in one duffel
sized package. I demo’ed the aluminum tripod version at a BVARC meeting
about a year ago. I’m going to avoid the dog tethers as I think the sandy
soil I have in Woodville would allow them to pull out too easy, that’s why I’m
looking for the screw/auger type (thanks for someone giving the correct term,
it was driving me nutz) which I think will be tougher to pull out. These
will not be permanent YET. I plan on finding the best location on the lot
possible and use them until I can get a real tower installed, and then later,
for portable operations. Thanks again everyone. Maybe I’ll catch some of you
