Hate to say, but Ravi took the words right out of my fingers.

Oh, I apologize - I forgot to address the muffler question. An excellent
muffler addresses part of the noise issue, but not all of it. A large portion
of the noise also comes from the mechanicals themselves directly acting as
transducers. So, all of the "quiet" generators have their mechanicals enclosed
in soundproofing and baffling. This increases cost over a basic fuel
tank+engine+generator mounted in an open frame.

I don't know. I've never been able to justify buying a generator, I've only
noticed the prices as I gazed longingly over the power equipment aisle at
Lowe's.

I almost didn't send that email because it doesn't answer the question, but I
decided to in hopes that someone with actual experience would be able to
address the cost issue.

I would think that nearly all of the acoustic noise comes from the engine
driving the generator, so how quiet the thing runs would depend strongly on how
good the muffler is. I wonder if people sell aftermarket mufflers for those
little engines to make them quieter. A quick google check shows that they do,
and they're under $100.

And how quiet were those $150/KW generators?

I have looked at generators for a while, and I normally expect to see prices on
the order of $100-$150 per kilowatt and that's like $400 per kilowatt, and you
can buy a lot of extension cord for the price difference.

Much better deal than a Honda and you can daisy chain together !

Mine is super quiet and runs perfect !

Keep in mind, the more you pay, the quieter the generator will be, the easier
it will be to hear those far off contacts.

You get what you pay for, within reason.

Hello all,

Closed on my ham friendly QTH in Woodville TX and starting on Oct. 24th will
start stringing some nice wire antennas until I can get a tower up.

I would like to back everything up with a portable generator which would also
be nice to have for roving, and park work.

Opinions: who has the best buys in portable generators? Yamaha prices are right
up with Honda now, but now I see Generac, Ryobi and Hyundai all making less
expensive but comparable output generators.

Thanks in advance for your input.
